U.S. 18 improvement project to be discussed Sept. 7 in Hawkeye

AMES, Iowa ñ Aug. 30, 2011 ñ The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold a public information meeting Wednesday, Sept. 7, to discuss the next phase of construction on the U.S. 18 concrete overlay project between Fredericksburg and West Union. The public is invited to attend the meeting anytime between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Hawkeye Community Hall, 102 E. Main St.

This public information meeting will be conducted utilizing an open forum format. No formal presentation will be made. Iowa DOT staff members along with representatives from Manatt’s Inc., the contractor for the project, will be present to discuss the project informally. Traffic control plans and a work schedule will be available at the meeting.

The next phase of construction on the U.S.18 concrete overlay project between Fredericksburg and West Union was scheduled to start Tuesday, Aug. 30. The contractor will start milling at West Union and proceed west to Fredericksburg. During this stage of construction traffic will be controlled through the work area with flaggers and a pilot car. The work will take place during daylight hours. This phase of construction may take up to two weeks to complete with the contractor possibly working 7 days a week.

The concrete overlay will begin once the milling is complete. During the overlay stage, the contractor will continue to use flaggers and a pilot car, as well as traffic signals in the construction work zone. The contractor will be allowed to create work zones up to 3.5 miles in length. This traffic control will be in place 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The final stage of the project is expected to take five weeks to complete, weather permitting.
