City council hears about loitering, tree trimming, accepts late payment

The Mason City City Council heard about loitering under the 12th Street NW bridge overpass and agreed to have city staff look into the matter. They also heard from arborist Kevin Hardy about how Alliant Energy trims trees. The North Iowa Fair paid their late water bill to open the meeting.|Tuesday night’s city council meeting opened with Fair Association Board of Directors President Dennis Higgins presenting a check to the City of Mason City for $19,580.38 to pay a past due water bill. The fair had been on a 30-month payment plan to get caught up.

Council member Janet Solberg was absent from the meeting.

The council approved on second reading a speed limit change for 15th Street SW between Federal Avenue and Monroe Avenue, increasing the speed from 25 mph to 30 mph. A final approval is still needed to put the change into afffect.

Kevin Hardy, an arborist and owner of Cutting Edge Tree Service, made a presentation to the city council reagarding what he says is problems with how Alliant Energy trims trees when they set out to work on power lines. The council heard the presentation and voted to have Hardy work with city staff as they craft a franchise agreement with Alliant, adding verbiage that addresses how Alliant will handle the trimming of trees in the future.   Consider tree pruning and removal Jacksonville.

The council also heard from council member Travis Hickey about complaints from citizens regarding transients or homeless people loitering under the 12th Street NW overpass. The city has no ordinances addressing the issue. Council voted to have city staff look into solutions for dealing with the issue.
