Mason City police officer shoots pit bull

MASON CITY – On July 1st, 2011 at 4:56 p.m. a Mason City police officer responded to a complaint of a vicious pit bull running at large in the 200 block of 15th Street NW. Dispatch advised that this pit bull had charged two small children that were playing in a pool, located in their front yard. Parents were able to get the kids to safety.

The officer arrived on scene and started to investigate the incident. After locating the address that the dog came from, the officer attempted to make contact with the owner, so that the dog could be secured. At this time the dog attempted to attack the officer. The officer was forced to shoot the dog. The dog died as a result of its injury.

The investigation is on-going and charges are pending.
