Panthers Sending 13 to NCAA West Preliminary Rounds

The NCAA announced the list of declared entries for the Division I Track & Field Preliminary Rounds on Thursday, and 13 athletes from the University of Northern Iowa are among those who have qualified. |The NCAA announced the list of declared entries for the Division I Track & Field Preliminary Rounds on Thursday, and 13 athletes from the University of Northern Iowa are among those who have qualified. UNI will travel to the West Preliminary Rounds being hosted by the University of Oregon from May 26-28.

The 13 UNI student-athletes who qualified will compete in a total of 11 events over the three-day meet. UNI’s qualifiers on the men’s side include Tanner Hurt (hammer throw), Jordan Williams (discus, hammer throw), Daniel Gooris (pole vault), Justin Romero (shot put), Sam Kranz (pole vault), Jarred Herring (100m), Carlos Anderson (100m), Aaron Stockstell (800m) and the 4x100m relay team of Anderson, Derek Kramer, Wilmot Wellington and Herring.

On the women’s side, UNI will be represented by Holli Hosch (800m), Olimpia Nowak (100m hurdles, 400m hurdles) and Traci Harms (hammer throw).

In addition, junior Olimpia Nowak has locked up a spot in the heptathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships being held in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 8-11. The multi-events do not compete at the Preliminary Rounds, instead advancing the top 24 scores in the nation directly to the Outdoor Championships. Nowak holds the 17th-best mark in the nation heading into the Outdoor Championships.

For each individual event contested at each of the Championship Preliminary Round sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes are accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested at each of the Championship Preliminary Round sites, the top 24 declared relay teams are accepted into the competition.

Qualifying to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships is accomplished through performance in the Preliminary Round competition at each site. Twelve competitors from each individual event and a minimum of eight teams from each relay event advance from each Preliminary Round site to the Final Championship Meet.

Bloomington, Ind., and Eugene, Ore., will host the 2011 NCAA Division I Track and Field East and West Preliminary Rounds, respectively. Both sites will host competition May 26-28. The 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 8-11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
