Mohawks send four relays to compete at Drake Relays

MASON CITY – Coach Jed Vorba’s Mohawk track team qualified four relays and one individual event for the 102nd Drake Relays, which got underway Thursday in Des Moines.

The Mohawks qualified the 1600 meter medley, the 4×100 meter relay, the 4×400 meter relay and the 4×800 meter relay.

The Mohawks have high hopes for the medley relay, which is anchored by star middle-distance runner Coty Thompson. “He’s coming off an injury, so he’s just getting his form back,” Coach Vorba said.

Thompson just signed with the Northern Iowa Panthers this week to continue his track career in college.

The Mohawks have four runners that will each compete in three running events. Aaron Sanchez will be running the unusual double of an 800 meter leg in the 4×800 relay as well as a leg in the 4×100 meter relay.

Vorba says the competition will be tough in all the events the Mohawks compete in, as the Drake Relays allow the top performing teams and individuals in the state to line up in each event, regardless of class.

Thompson will be running the 1600 meter run individually and is an alternate for the open 800 meter run.
