Panthers Bow Out of NCAA Championships

At 184 pounds, Ryan Loder bowed out just shy of the All-America rounds, falling to Wisconsin’s No. 4 seeded Travis Rutt by a 4-2 decision. At 157 pounds, David Bonin fell to Harvard’s Walter Peppelman in the third round of the consolation matches.

In the fourth round of consolations Rutt held on for the win over Loder, scoring two takedowns in the first period. Loder rode Rutt the entire second period and picked up an escape to start the third, but was unable to secure the takedown in the final minute. Loder finishes the season with a 30-11 record including a 3-2 mark in the NCAA Tournament.

Loder picked up his first win in the consolation round, earning a 6-1 decision over Oregon State’s Brice Arand at 184 pounds. Leading 2-1 after a first period takedown, Loder rode Arand out in the second period. After starting down to start the third, Loder escaped and secured another takedown to earn the 6-1 win with riding time.

In the third round of consolations, Loder scored a 7-3 win over Virginia’s Jonathan Fausey. Loder scored two takedowns and an escape while picking up a penalty point and a point on riding time criteria in the win.

At 157 pounds, David Bonin opened the morning with an 8-4 win over Northern Illinois Bryan Deutsch. Bonin scored an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead before Deutsch evened the score with a reversal in the second period. Bonin escaped, and after choosing down to start the third took a 4-2 lead with another escape. Deutsch evened the score at 4-4 with takedown, but Bonin quickly escaped and registered a takedown of his own.

In the next match, Harvard’s No. 11-seeded Walter Peppelman caught Bonin on his back, pinning him early in the first period and eliminating him from the tournament. Bonin finishes the season with a 26-13 record, including a 2-2 record at the NCAA Championships.
