Garner gains population in 2010 Census count

The census of 2010 was bleak for much of North Iowa, but not for Garner.

According to census numbers released last week, Garner’s population increased from 2,922 to 3,129.

In a memo from Garner City Administrator Brent Hinson to the Mayor and City Council, “the U.S. Census Bureau released county and city population results for the 2010 Census. I am pleased to say that Garner’s population increased from 2,922 to 3,129.”

Hinson said the positive effects could be many. “The immediate effect of this increase will be Road Use Tax funds, which should increase by around $7,000 per year, but I foresee many other positive consequences of our (now officially documented) growth.”

Hinson also listed other trends in the population growth. “On a statewide analysis of 38 such communities (also including non-county seat communities of over 2,000 in North Iowa), Garner ranks second in population growth, with 7.1% growth from Census 2000 to Census 2010, behind only Spirit Lake. In the 40-year period from 1970-2010 Garner still ranks 4th in overall population growth.”|
