MASON CITY – Four drunk-driving convictions apparently failed to damper this suspect’s enthusiasm for tooling about the town after cold ones were endangered, and after a possibly-contentious pursuit by police and the discovery of a mysterious powdery substance, her troubles are only just beginning.

A Guatemalan child rapist who illegally returned to the United States, lived in Northwest Iowa without registering as a sex offender and was discovered after an OWI-and-eluding arrest is headed to federal prison.

Federal prosecutors said the suspect is a Guatemalan citizen who was convicted in Massachusetts (sanctuary blue state) in 2016 of rape of a child with force for an offense committed when he was 15 years old. He served prison time and was removed from the United States in 2018.

Niz-Mendez later returned without receiving permission from the federal government and settled in Northern Iowa.

This Iowa man donned a suit, taped his mouth shut, draped an American flag over his shoulders, and armed himself with a loaded gun as he attempted to enter a city council meeting, and his choices have now made him guilty of a federal firearms crime.

A repeat Northern Iowa felon who was already forbidden from possessing firearms — and had previously been convicted of illegally possessing one — was caught driving with an arsenal of 20 guns and is now headed to federal prison.

A highly publicized police sting that led to an Iowa university professor’s arrest, firing and public humiliation has ended without a conviction after prosecutors acknowledged a defect in the state’s grooming law left them without enough evidence to proceed.

ROCKWELL — Police in the small Northern Iowa community of Rockwell are asking for the public’s help identifying people suspected of prowling through mailboxes and stealing packages Wednesday afternoon.

The Rockwell Police Department said the alleged thefts occurred between approximately 4:45 and 4:51 p.m. on August 12, 2026.

MASON CITY — A broken window at a supposedly vacant Mason City apartment led police Thursday morning to two alleged squatters holed up inside, including a repeat theft defendant already tangled in criminal cases stretching from Mason City to Cedar Falls. Tristan Gerard Hillhouse and Emily Jo Kellogg were collared inside the apartment at 123 S. Monroe Avenue, with Hillhouse already wanted on a $2,000 cash warrant and facing pending accusations that include organized retail theft, a Mason City Menards theft, domestic abuse assault and other alleged criminal activity.
