COLUMBUS, OHIO — The No. 10 Iowa Hawkeye field hockey team battled back from an early deficit to defeat No. 12 Penn State, 2-1, on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at Buckeye Varsity Field, advancing to a semifinal showdown with No. 1 Maryland.
The Hawkeyes improved to 13-4 on the season behind goals from Fréderique van Cleef and Dionne van Aalsum, both of whom recorded their 18th goals of the year. Iowa dominated the offensive statistics, outshooting Penn State 14-2 while allowing the Nittany Lions just one shot on goal.
Penn State (12-6) wasted little time taking the lead, striking just 5:19 into the opening quarter when Josephine Purdy scored off an assist from Morgan Snyder.
Despite surrendering the early goal, Iowa steadily took control of the contest.
Van Cleef delivered the equalizer with 3:03 remaining in the second quarter, scoring an unassisted goal at the 26:57 mark to send the teams toward halftime tied at 1-1.
The Hawkeyes continued applying offensive pressure throughout the second half, eventually breaking through in the fourth quarter.
With just over seven minutes remaining in regulation, van Aalsum scored the game-winning goal at 52:48, also unassisted, to give Iowa its first lead of the afternoon.
The Iowa defense took care of the rest, preventing Penn State from mounting a comeback and securing the Hawkeyes’ place in the conference tournament semifinals.
Iowa goalkeeper Julia Claessens earned the victory, improving her season record to 7-3.
The Hawkeyes finished with a commanding 9-1 advantage in shots on goal and earned both penalty corners awarded during the contest, holding Penn State without a penalty corner.
The victory was especially significant considering Penn State entered the tournament ranked 12th nationally and had compiled a 6-2 record in Big Ten Conference play during the regular season.
Iowa, which finished its conference schedule at 4-4, demonstrated its postseason potential by controlling the statistical battle and generating scoring opportunities against one of the league’s strongest teams.
Van Cleef and van Aalsum continued their impressive offensive seasons, each reaching the 18-goal mark as the Hawkeyes moved one victory closer to the Big Ten championship game.
