CEDAR FALLS — Panther football delivered a Halloween treat for the home crowd Saturday, October 31, as Christian Collins and Xavier Terrell each topped 100 rushing yards and scored twice to help UNI defeat Indiana State 45-23.

The Panthers improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play, extending their perfect home record to 4-0. UNI has won 17 consecutive meetings with the Sycamores in Cedar Falls.

A 21-point fourth quarter settled a game that remained within reach for Indiana State well into the second half. Collins broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown on fourth-and-one, Terrell added a 38-yard scoring run and Calvin Jaworski delivered the finishing blow with a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown.

UNI’s defense helped establish the early advantage. After the teams exchanged field goals, Mekhi Toms forced a fumble by Indiana State quarterback Elijah Owens, and Isaiah Pinks recovered to give the Panthers possession at the Sycamores’ 40-yard line.

Collins needed just two carries to cover that distance, scoring from 15 yards out. Blake Pankratz’s extra point gave UNI a 10-3 lead.

Indiana State answered with an 18-yard touchdown pass but missed the extra point, leaving the Panthers ahead 10-9.

Jaxon Dailey then directed an eight-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. A 20-yard completion to Taj Hughes, a 14-yard run by Terrell and a 19-yard catch by tight end Briggs Hughston helped move UNI into scoring position. Dailey finished the possession with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Hughes for a 17-9 lead.

Indiana State threatened to answer before halftime, reaching the UNI 2-yard line. But a mishandled handoff put the ball on the turf, and Franz Reisz recovered as time expired to preserve the Panthers’ eight-point cushion.

UNI survived another potential momentum swing early in the third quarter. Dailey threw an interception, but Indiana State’s ensuing possession stalled after penalties pushed the Sycamores backward. A missed 41-yard field goal left the score unchanged.

The Panthers capitalized. Dailey connected with Brady McCullough for 62 yards, setting up Terrell’s nine-yard touchdown run.

Indiana State responded with a rushing touchdown before Collins opened UNI’s fourth-quarter surge with his fourth-down scoring run. After Owens scored from two yards out to bring the Sycamores within 31-23, Terrell’s second touchdown and Jaworski’s second pick-six of the season put the game away.

The Panther defense provided one final stop, turning Indiana State away after the Sycamores again reached the UNI 2-yard line.

Collins finished with a career-high 107 rushing yards, while Terrell added 103. They became UNI’s first pair of 100-yard rushers in the same game since Tye Edwards and Amauri Pesek-Hickson accomplished the feat against Valparaiso in 2024.

Dailey completed 12 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown. Hughes caught four passes for 59 yards and a score.

Braden McShane led the defense with a career-high 17 tackles, including four solo stops and a sack. Kolben Miller added 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss.

UNI’s 4-0 home start is its first since 2019, when the Panthers finished 7-0 inside the UNI-Dome.

The win followed UNI’s last-second loss at Southern Illinois a week earlier.

The Panthers will close their regular-season home schedule against South Dakota State on Saturday, November 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central, with coverage on ESPN+, 93.5 The Mix and the Panther Sports Radio Network.
