MASON CITY — Drivers on two Cerro Gordo County road segments could face a 15 mph speed-limit reduction under a proposal included in the county supervisors’ meeting packet for Monday, November 2, 2026.
County Engineer Brandon Billings is seeking a public hearing on lowering the speed limit from 60 mph to 45 mph along portions of Thrush Avenue and 300th Court. The proposed reductions would apply to traffic traveling in both directions.
On Thrush Avenue, also designated County Road S56, the change would cover the stretch from Mason City’s southern corporate limits to the intersection with 240th Street.
On 300th Court, the proposed 45 mph zone would extend west from the U.S. 65, or Orchid Avenue, right-of-way to the road’s dead end.
Public hearing sought before speed-limit changes
Billings’ written request asks supervisors to place the matter on their agenda so a public hearing can be scheduled, giving residents an opportunity to discuss the proposed reductions.
The packet does not identify a hearing date or an effective date for either change. The request does not mean the lower speed limits have been approved.
Billings’ letter also does not explain what prompted the proposal. It includes no crash figures, traffic-study findings or details about resident complaints.
If adopted as proposed, the changes would lower the speed limit by 15 mph throughout both identified segments. For now, the county engineer is asking to move the proposal into a public discussion.
