AMES — Iowa State soccer couldn’t slow No. 20 BYU’s attack Monday, October 26, as the Cougars handed the Cyclones a 3-0 loss at the Cyclone Sports Complex, extending Iowa State’s scoreless stretch to three matches.

The Cyclones dropped to 4-9-4 overall and 0-7-2 in Big 12 play. BYU improved to 10-3-3 and 6-1-2 in the conference after outshooting Iowa State 24-3 and scoring twice in less than two minutes late in the second half.

It was Iowa State’s seventh shutout loss of the season. The offensive struggles continued after the Cyclones’ loss to Kansas State despite goalkeeper Eme McClenahan’s career-high 12 saves.

BYU takes control early

The Cougars generated eight shots in the opening 20 minutes before Avery Frischknecht broke through at 24:05 for a 1-0 lead.

Iowa State kept the deficit at one goal through halftime, but BYU had built a 12-1 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Cyclones remained within reach until Presley Freeman scored at 74:45. Mattyn Summers-Oviatt followed at 76:07, giving BYU two goals in a span of 82 seconds and a commanding 3-0 lead.

The goal was Summers-Oviatt’s fifth of the season. Frischknecht and Freeman each scored their first.

Cyclones limited to three shots

Sophie Forrester and Alaina Villa put attempts on goal for Iowa State, which had three players register a shot.

McClenahan finished with seven saves and played all 90 minutes. Defenders Makenna Marshall, Erin Hopewell and Sydney Walters also went the distance.

Iowa State was credited with eight team saves to BYU’s two. The Cougars finished with a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks and committed eight fouls to the Cyclones’ five.

Nine BYU players attempted at least two shots, with Mia Goettsche and Mika Krommenhoek leading the team with three apiece. Three Cougar goalkeepers combined for the shutout.

Sophie Sivulich, Afton Perry, Emma Hamberlin and Emma Neff were credited with assists for BYU.

Oklahoma State visits Thursday

Iowa State will conclude its three-game homestand and play its final home match Thursday, October 29, against Oklahoma State.

Kickoff against the Cowgirls is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames. ESPN+ will stream the match.
