CHARLES CITY — Marilyn Swancutt, 93, of Charles City, died October 24, 2026, at home surrounded by her loving family, leaving those closest to her with memories of her quick humor, spirited personality and affection for the farm and animals she loved.

A private memorial service will be held. Calvary Cemetery in Charles City is listed as her final resting place.

Born March 25, 1933, to Evelyn (Wentz) and Thaddeus Welter, Marilyn grew up helping raise pigs and tending other animals on the family farm. Those early responsibilities sparked an affection for animals that stayed with her throughout her life, including a special fondness for her cats.

Her education began in country school and continued in New Hampton before she graduated from Charles City High School. She went on to spend many years working for the local telephone company while also operating and maintaining the family farm. The farm remained a source of happiness and a lasting connection to her upbringing.

Marilyn and her husband, Calvin, built a long marriage that included time on the dance floor and vacations together. Their travels and shared experiences remained treasured parts of her life after his death.

Her Catholic faith also held a steady place in her daily life. She attended church faithfully for decades, carrying that devotion alongside her commitment to family and her care for animals.

Marilyn was especially close to her sister, Lavonne, and to the nieces and nephews who were such an important part of her world. Her family knew her as someone whose caring nature came with plenty of spunk and a ready wit.

She is survived by her sister, Lavonne Hackman; nieces and nephew, Deb (Denny) Schmidt, Charlet (Rick) Boehmer, Jan (Dave) Lovik, Jeff (Kate) Hackman, Lisa (Rick) Miller and Chris (Bob) Davies; her special great-niece and caretaker, Chasity (Joe) Cook; and many other great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Calvin; brother-in-law, Virgil Hackman; niece, Vickie (George) Davis; and nephew, Sean Hackman.

For Marilyn’s family, the memories span a lifetime of shared experiences: her years with Calvin, her attachment to the farm, her love for her animals and the humor she brought to familiar gatherings. Those everyday connections form a lasting part of the life they now honor.

Family and friends may share memories and condolences through Marilyn’s obituary at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home.
