COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Berit Parten scored twice and Reilly Heman added her team-leading eighth goal of the season as Iowa women’s soccer beat Maryland 3-1 on October 16 at Ludwig Field.
The Hawkeyes improved to 7-4-5 overall and 2-3-4 in Big Ten play. Maryland dropped to 4-9-2 and 1-7-1 in the conference.
Iowa’s sixth consecutive victory over the Terrapins came behind two first-half goals and a timely answer after Maryland threatened to pull even.
Hawkeyes build an early cushion
Heman opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing a cross from Kylie Cino to put Iowa ahead 1-0. The assist was Cino’s first of the season.
Parten doubled the advantage in the 24th minute, scoring off a combination involving Abby Skiff and Lucia Englund.
Skiff’s second assist of the season matched her career high, while Englund’s third also tied her career best.
Both teams attempted six shots before halftime, but Iowa carried a 2-0 lead into the break. The Hawkeyes also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Parten answers Maryland’s push
Maryland cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 63rd minute when defender Ella Bulava scored.
Parten restored Iowa’s two-goal cushion in the 79th minute, striking from outside the penalty area for her second goal of the night and seventh of the season.
The performance brought Parten to a career-high 21 points this season. She also scored in Iowa’s first Big Ten victory of the season against Rutgers.
Iowa and Maryland finished with 12 shots apiece, with the Hawkeyes holding a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Iowa goalkeeper Braelynn Galt made four saves.
Millie Greer and Iba Oching each played the full 90 minutes for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa extends its hold over the Terrapins
The Hawkeyes have outscored Maryland 17-1 during their six-game winning streak in the series. Bulava’s second-half goal was the Terrapins’ only score across those meetings.
