MALLARD — A West Bend man was injured Monday evening when his pickup and a semi were involved in a crash at a rural Northern Iowa intersection, where a trailer broke loose and struck a utility pole.

The crash happened at approximately 7:42 p.m. October 19 at 500th Street and 525th Avenue near Mallard in Palo Alto County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Denton Knobloch, 57, of West Bend, was driving a 2008 Ford F-150. The other vehicle, a 2013 Peterbilt truck tractor, was driven by Jacob Banwart, 32, of Rolfe.

Knobloch was injured and transported by Palo Alto County emergency responders to Emmetsburg for treatment. The patrol reported he was not wearing a seat belt. His condition and the extent of his injuries were not provided.

The patrol’s preliminary narrative describes a collision involving a trailer at the intersection, followed by a vehicle being dragged a short distance and coming to rest in the northwest ditch. A trailer also became unhitched and struck a utility pole at the northeast corner.

However, the report contains conflicting vehicle references, leaving the precise sequence of the crash unclear.

The Peterbilt’s carrier was listed as S & M Banwart Farms Inc. of West Bend. No hazardous materials were involved. Wickman Auto/Tow removed the Ford pickup.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical personnel assisted the Iowa State Patrol.

The collision followed another Northern Iowa crash in which a driver was trapped and airlifted after a collision with a semi trailer at Highway 9 and Highway 218 in Mitchell County on October 17.
