WASHINGTON, D.C. — Iowa residents receiving Social Security will see their benefits increase 3.6% in 2027, bringing a bigger monthly payment as households budget for groceries, housing and other expenses.
The Social Security Administration announced the cost-of-living adjustment Oct. 14. Retirement benefits will increase by an average of about $75 a month nationwide, although each recipient’s dollar increase will depend on their benefit amount.
Higher Social Security payments begin in January 2027. Increased Supplemental Security Income payments begin Dec. 31, 2026.
What the Social Security increase means in dollars
For Iowans trying to plan next year’s household budget, the percentage translates into these illustrative amounts before deductions:
- A $1,500 monthly benefit would increase $54, to $1,554.
- A $2,000 monthly benefit would increase $72, to $2,072.
- A $2,500 monthly benefit would increase $90, to $2,590.
Someone receiving $2,000 a month would gain approximately $864 over a full year before changes in deductions.
The importance of those payments extends beyond individual households. NIT’s earlier coverage of Social Security’s role in Iowa communities examined how retirement benefits help support everyday spending, particularly in rural areas.
Why the full increase may not reach your bank account
The cost-of-living adjustment, commonly called COLA, is tied by federal law to an inflation measure known as the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.
It is intended to help benefits keep pace with rising prices. It does not guarantee that every household’s expenses will rise at the same rate.
Recipients should also distinguish their gross benefit from their actual deposit. Medicare premiums and other deductions can affect the amount they receive.
SSA says personalized notices will show the new benefit amount and deductions. Medicare premium information for 2027 will be available through recipients’ online accounts starting in late November.
When to check your new benefit amount
Most beneficiaries can view their COLA notices through their personal my Social Security account beginning in late November. People seeking online delivery should create an account and enroll in paperless notices by Nov. 18. Mailed notices will arrive in December.
The adjustment reaches retirement, survivor and disability beneficiaries, along with people receiving SSI. Altogether, approximately 76 million Americans will be affected; some receive both Social Security and SSI.
Recipients should use official SSA channels and protect their personal information. The agency warns against requests for advance fees, gift cards or wire transfers.
The risk of financial fraud is real: NIT recently reported on a stolen Treasury check racket targeting Iowa banks.
For households planning ahead, the personalized benefit notice will provide the clearest picture of what will actually arrive in 2027.
