Born January 3, 1929, in Tyler, Minnesota, Peter was the son of Peter and Mary (Conlan) Fransco. His family moved to Ruthven in 1930, where his father continued practicing medicine.

Growing up, Peter enjoyed Lost Island Lake, time with friends and playing clarinet in the band. He graduated from Ruthven High School in 1946 and earned his degree from Creighton University in Omaha in 1951.

His interest in religious life took shape during college. He initially pursued studies with the Franciscan Order, spending a year at the Franciscan Minor Seminary in Santa Barbara, California. He then discerned that his calling was to serve as a diocesan priest.

After Bishop Joseph Mueller accepted him as a seminarian for the Sioux City Diocese, Peter continued his education at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, followed by theological studies at St. Bernard’s Seminary in Dubuque.

Bishop Mueller ordained him to the priesthood on May 31, 1958.

Father Peter began his ministry as an assistant pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Sioux City, serving from 1958 to 1960, and then at St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll from 1960 to 1965. His service brought him to Northern Iowa as a faculty member at Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona during the 1965-66 school year.

He subsequently served as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Dow City, also attending Buck Grove, from 1966 to 1968; St. Brigid Parish in Grand Junction, also attending Paton, from 1968 to 1976; and Sacred Heart Parish in Laurens from 1976 to 1982.

His later assignments included St. Mary Parish in Willey from 1982 to 1984 and St. Mary Parish in Pomeroy, also attending Palmer, from 1984 to 1991. He concluded his active parish ministry at St. Mary Parish in Mallard, serving from 1991 until his retirement in 1999.

Those honoring Father Peter describe a humble man who lived simply and offered guidance and comfort through his faith. His decades of ministry connected him with parishioners across numerous Iowa communities.

He is survived by his sister, Ellen Jelinek; niece, Christine Goodstein; several cousins; his brother priests; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Phillip, who died in infancy.

Geelan Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Family and friends may share condolences and find service information through Father Peter’s obituary at Geelan Funeral Home.
