MASON CITY — Robert “Bob” Lawrence Dahl, 65, of Mason City, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. A gifted mathematician, talented artist, devoted son and beloved brother, Bob will be remembered for his remarkable sense of humor, compassionate heart and ability to make even an ordinary conversation unforgettable.

A private family celebration of Bob’s life has already been held. Memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, where Bob was baptized and confirmed.

Born April 18, 1961, in Mason City, Bob was the son of Herbert and Peggy Dahl. The fifth of eight children, he grew up surrounded by brothers, sisters and the countless experiences that come with being part of a large family.

He graduated from Mason City High School in 1979 and continued his education at Luther College, earning an accounting degree in 1983. Particularly gifted in mathematics, Bob later pursued actuarial studies at the University of Wisconsin.

His intellectual curiosity extended far beyond numbers. Bob was a lifelong learner who enjoyed exploring history, comedy and an extraordinary variety of subjects. His ability to recall facts, quotations and obscure details made him an unbeatable teammate during trivia games.

But Bob’s family remembers something even more remarkable than his intelligence: the kindness and compassion that shaped everything he did.

His siblings cherished his easygoing personality, quick wit and genuine interest in the lives of others. Conversations with Bob could stretch for hours, moving effortlessly from childhood memories to favorite movies, television comedy and just about anything else imaginable.

A particular favorite was the television series Seinfeld, whose humor fit perfectly with Bob’s sharp comedic instincts.

His family imagined that a cross-country road trip with Bob would be an adventure filled with laughter, stories and lively conversation. He had a gift for making people comfortable, listening attentively and finding humor in everyday moments.

Bob was especially devoted to his mother, serving as an extraordinary caregiver for many years. His patient and loving attention reflected the quiet generosity that made him such an important presence in his family.

To his nieces and nephews, Bob was much more than an uncle. He was a teacher, supporter and friend who celebrated their accomplishments and took a sincere interest in their lives.

Whether teaching a youngster to play golf, demonstrating how to draw Ninja Turtles or simply listening to their latest adventures, Bob had a way of making every child feel important.

His talents and interests were remarkably diverse. Bob was an excellent bowler and table tennis player whose competitive skills made him nearly impossible to defeat during family tournaments.

He also possessed a beautiful bass singing voice and considerable artistic ability.

A devoted sports fan, Bob enjoyed watching track and swimming competitions and following the Minnesota Vikings, Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones.

Despite his many interests, he found some of life’s greatest pleasures in quiet, uncomplicated moments. A picnic near Clear Lake or an afternoon watching ocean waves could bring him as much happiness as any grand adventure.

For his seven siblings, Bob’s passing leaves an irreplaceable absence. They remember a brother who shared their joys, listened to their troubles and brought warmth to the simplest family gathering.

The bond among the eight Dahl children remained a defining part of his life, strengthened by decades of shared experiences, family stories and unconditional affection.

Bob is survived by his siblings, Dan (Denise) Dahl, Julie (Lance) Soliah, Ellen Slothouber, Barb (Wade) Houg, Janice (Pat) McGowan, Karen (Drew) Kosmowski and Diane (Mike) Fitzgerald.

He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Nina (Erik), James (Rachel), John, Kristin (Paul), Matt, Stefanie, Nichole, Meagan (Sean), Michael (Elizabeth), Lauren (Bryan), Kaitlyn, Sean (Ella), Kelly, James (Gabbie), Amanda, Emily, Zach (Daniela), Luda (Eli) and Nick (Eva).

His surviving great-nieces and great-nephews include Logan, Livia, Eleanor, Clara, Louis, Anna, Miley, Ashton, Magnus, Aksel, Harriet, Henry, Liam, Jordyn, Brynn, Jack and Nolan.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Peggy Dahl, and his great-nephew, Noah Lucas.

The Dahl family extends its appreciation to the healthcare professionals at Mayo Clinic and MercyOne for the compassionate and skilled care Bob received throughout his illness.
