GRAETTINGER — Ellen M. Behrends, 75, died October 10, 2026, in Emmetsburg, leaving a family that knew her strength, her stubborn streak and the deep love beneath it. A mother of six, Ellen worked hard, weathered difficult years and took particular pride in her children and grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church, 102 S. Cameron Ave., in Graettinger. A service will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Her final resting place will be Graettinger City Cemetery.

Ellen was born March 20, 1951, in Avon, Illinois, to Milo and Grace (Baker) Starnes.

On December 30, 1978, she married David Behrends at United Methodist Church in Graettinger. Together, they raised six children while balancing the demands of work and home.

For 20 years, Ellen worked as a bartender and waitress for Mike Billings. She also held jobs in several factories over the years, helping support her family while caring for her children and household.

Her family’s tribute presents Ellen as someone who met life on her own terms. She could be unyielding and slow to let go of a grievance, but she also offered loyal friendship, laughter and affection. Those close to her knew a woman whose determination carried her through hardship and whose family remained a lasting source of pride.

Ellen found enjoyment in familiar routines and good company. She followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers, played cards, visited with friends and settled in for Wheel of Fortune. A good book was another favorite way to spend her time.

She is survived by her children, Candy Sawalski, David Cole, John Cole, Michelle (Jeff) Hall, Rich (Jessica) Behrends and Terry (Kristi) Behrends; her sister, Rose Mary Melvin; her brother, Bud Starnes; six granddaughters; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents, Milo and Grace; her siblings, Bill Starnes, Kay Cole and Ila Laird; and her infant daughter, Lisa Cole.

Family and friends may share condolences and memories through Ellen’s obituary at Henry-Olson Funeral Home and Crematory.
