Iowa State football battered by No. 8 BYU as Cyclones fall 24-10 in Provo

PROVO, UTAH — Iowa State's offense sputtered, its defense spent much of the night under siege, and No. 8 BYU delivered the big plays Friday night, October 9, 2026, handing the Cyclones a 24-10 defeat before 64,632 fans at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cougars remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 Conference play, while Iowa State fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league. BYU rolled up 506 yards of total offense compared to just 200 for Iowa State. The Cyclones managed only 49 yards in the first half, their lowest first-half total since at least 2012.

PROVO, UTAH — Iowa State’s offense sputtered, its defense spent much of the night under siege, and No. 8 BYU delivered the big plays Friday night, October 9, 2026, handing the Cyclones a 24-10 defeat before 64,632 fans at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

The Cougars remained unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 Conference play, while Iowa State fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league. BYU rolled up 506 yards of total offense compared to just 200 for Iowa State. The Cyclones managed only 49 yards in the first half, their lowest first-half total since at least 2012.

BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier completed 22 of 30 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns while rushing nine times for 109 yards. Iowa State quarterback Jaylen Raynor completed 16 of 29 passes for 98 yards and one touchdown.

BYU strikes early, Cyclones struggle to respond

BYU marched 75 yards on 10 plays on its opening possession, with Journee Tonga scoring on a six-yard run. Iowa State answered with an 11-play, 33-yard drive ending in Kyle Konrardy’s 40-yard field goal early in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 7-3.

But Bachmeier connected with Kyler Kasper for a five-yard touchdown pass with 1:51 remaining before halftime, giving BYU a 14-3 lead at the break.

A 75-yard dagger puts BYU in command

Iowa State’s defense kept fighting, making three fourth-down stops, including turning BYU away at the Cyclone two-yard line after a 97-yard drive in the third quarter. But Iowa State failed to take advantage.

With 1:09 remaining in the third quarter, Bachmeier connected with Legend Glasker on a 75-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-3.

Raynor found Christian Greenlaw for a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 21-10. The Cyclones later drove 69 yards but Konrardy missed a 46-yard field goal with 3:47 left. BYU’s Matthias Dunn hit a 38-yard field goal to seal the 24-10 final.

Bachmeier makes history against Cyclones

According to Iowa State’s postgame notes, Bachmeier became the first player since at least 1996 to pass for 300 yards and rush for more than 100 yards in one game against the Cyclones. BYU averaged 8.3 yards per play.

Glasker had five catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Roger Saleapaga II added 72 receiving yards and Walker Lyons had 61.

Iowa State running back Aiden Flora gained 86 yards on 17 carries, bringing his season total to 680 yards through six games. That ranks among the 10 highest six-game rushing totals at Iowa State since 1995. Ty Claiborne led Cyclone receivers with three catches for 31 yards, and Tyler Fortenberry added three for 22.

Cyclone defense battles despite overwhelming yardage

Sullivan Schlimgen led Iowa State with 10 tackles, his third consecutive game in double figures. Eddie Lemos recorded a career-high seven tackles, while Brody Miller and Seth Johnson each made six. Carson Willich had five tackles and a tackle for loss, extending his streak of games with a tackle for loss to six.

Torrence “Toe” Sanders recovered a fumble on a BYU punt return to set up the Cyclones’ lone touchdown. Jonah DuPont averaged a career-best 50.5 yards on six punts, including a 60-yarder.

Troubling offensive numbers pile up

Iowa State’s 200 yards were its fewest since gaining 198 against TCU in 2018, and its 98 passing yards were the fewest since throwing for 79 against TCU that year. The Cyclones converted just two of 13 third downs, punted seven times and surrendered three sacks.

The Cyclones extended their school-record streak of games without being shut out to 195, dating back to 2010. They also topped 100 yards rushing for a 23rd straight game, the longest current streak in the Big 12. Raynor has thrown a touchdown pass in eight straight games.

Iowa State coach Jimmy Rogers fell to 3-3 in his first season leading the Cyclones. BYU remains unbeaten, while Iowa State must regroup after one of its least productive offensive performances in years.
