TEMPE, ARIZONA — Iowa State Cyclone soccer survived a relentless Arizona State attack and played the final 15 minutes shorthanded, leaning on 10 saves from Eme McClenahan to escape with a 1-1 Big 12 draw Thursday, October 8, 2026.
Alaina Villa supplied the equalizer with a long-range strike in the first half, while McClenahan matched her career high in saves to help the Cyclones secure points in consecutive conference matches for the first time in two years.
Iowa State finished the evening at 4-5-4 overall and 0-3-2 in Big 12 play. Arizona State moved to 7-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
The result followed Iowa State’s comeback draw against Utah, giving the Cyclones another hard-earned conference point.
Villa answers Arizona State’s early goal
The Sun Devils immediately put Iowa State’s defense under pressure, firing eight shots in the opening 18 minutes.
Their eighth attempt produced the breakthrough. Mya Angus scored at 17:47 off assists from Lucy Fazackerley and Amy Medley, putting Arizona State ahead 1-0.
Iowa State responded by bringing Villa into the attack in place of Sophie Forrester. The substitution paid off when the Cyclones capitalized on an Arizona State turnover.
Allison Charleston moved the ball to Izzy Kapanke, who pushed it ahead to Villa. From roughly 25 yards out, Villa drove a shot beyond goalkeeper Kennedy Zorn to tie the match at 31:02.
The goal was Villa’s third of the season, moving her into the team lead. Charleston and Kapanke each collected their second assist.
Arizona State reached halftime with a 16-3 advantage in shots, but McClenahan’s six first-half saves helped keep the score level.
Cyclones finish with 10 players
The pressure continued after halftime as Arizona State searched for a second goal.
Iowa State’s task became more difficult in the 75th minute when Aubrey Crawford received a red card, leaving the Cyclones a player short for the remainder of the match.
McClenahan continued turning away chances, and Arizona State also struck the crossbar as Iowa State protected the draw.
“We’re incredibly proud again of the way we fought tonight, especially after we went down to 10 in the second half,” Iowa State coach Matt Fannon said.
Makenna Marshall, Danica Lunceford and Erin Hopewell joined McClenahan in playing the full 90 minutes through the Arizona heat.
Arizona State controls the chances, but Iowa State earns a point
