MILFORD — Mary Joan Morris, 94, of Milford, Iowa, passed away October 6, 2026, at Accura Healthcare in Spirit Lake, leaving behind a remarkable 42-year teaching career, generations of students whose lives she helped shape, and a family that remained the center of her world.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1525 Three Cross Road, Milford, Iowa. Visitation will take place at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service.

Mary Joan Olson was born June 22, 1932, on the family farm near LeGrand, Iowa, the third daughter of Tenus and Mayme Ellen (Ward) Olson. She attended LeGrand Consolidated Schools, graduating in 1949.

Her passion for education led her to Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls. She graduated in 1951 with a two-year teaching degree, beginning a career that would eventually span more than four decades.

Mary began teaching at Dike Consolidated Schools in 1951, remaining there until 1954. She continued her career in the Waverly School District from 1954 to 1958 before returning to the University of Northern Iowa to complete her bachelor’s degree in 1959.

She subsequently taught in Cedar Rapids during the 1959-1960 school year.

While living in Cedar Falls, Mary met George Allen Morris at a football game. Their relationship blossomed, and the couple married August 20, 1960, at First Methodist Church in Marshalltown.

Shortly after their wedding, Mary and George moved to northwest Iowa, where she taught in Spirit Lake during the 1960-1961 school year.

As their family grew with the births of sons Kirk and John, Mary stepped away from the classroom to devote time to raising her children.

In 1964, she returned to teaching when Milford Community Schools hired her. There, she found a professional home and became a beloved second-grade teacher, serving the district for 33 years until her retirement in 1997.

Throughout her career, Mary believed that teaching meant far more than delivering lessons. She nurtured young minds, encouraged curiosity and worked to help every child discover the joy of learning.

Literature held a particularly important place in her classroom. Mary strongly believed that every child deserved access to books and the opportunity to experience the wonders of reading.

Her influence extended across generations of Iowa families. Many of the children who entered her second-grade classroom would carry the lessons, encouragement and kindness she shared into adulthood.

While education was her life’s work, family was always its foundation.

Mary treasured time with her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family vacations, visits to her children’s homes and gatherings at the family’s home on West Lake Okoboji were among her happiest experiences.

She particularly enjoyed welcoming loved ones into her home, where family connections and shared memories were always important.

Retirement brought opportunities to remain active in her community and pursue other interests.

A member of First Lutheran Church in Milford, Mary volunteered in the church office. She also delivered Meals on Wheels, extending the same generosity and concern for others that had characterized her years in education.

She enjoyed bridge clubs and was an enthusiastic supporter of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball, finding plenty of enjoyment in following her favorite teams.

Perhaps most memorable was Mary’s gift for making others feel welcome.

She greeted family members and friends with a warm smile and a personal hello, taking genuine interest in their lives and enjoying the conversations that followed.

Her kindness, generosity and ability to connect with people helped create lasting friendships throughout her life.

Mary is survived by her sons, Kirk Morris and his wife, Marie, of Fairmont, Minnesota, and John Morris and his wife, Lori, of Macksburg, Iowa.

She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Casey Morris and his wife, Sabrina; Cristen Thomas and her husband, Chris; Katherine Osborn and her husband, Matt; and Kevin Morris and his wife, Katie.

Her great-grandchildren, Asher George, Christopher John, Callie Jo and Tinley Taige, also survive, along with several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, Tenus and Mayme Olson; her sisters, Dorothy and Betty; her brother, Glenn; and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Family and friends may share memories, offer condolences or learn more about her upcoming memorial service through the Mary Morris obituary at Turner Jenness Funeral Home.

From the classrooms of Dike and Waverly to the generations of second-graders she taught in Milford, Mary’s influence reached well beyond her own family. Her legacy lives on through the students she encouraged, the children and grandchildren she cherished, and the countless acts of kindness that defined her 94 years.
