NASHUA — Judith “Judy” Ann Merfeld, 85, of Nashua, died Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Mayo Hospital – St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, Minnesota, surrounded by her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, October 7, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, with Rev. Ray Atwood celebrating the Mass. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.
Friends greeted the family Tuesday evening at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory – Olson Chapel in Nashua, where a rosary and scripture service were also held. Visitation continued Wednesday morning before the Mass.
Born July 20, 1941, in Charles City to Louis and Rose (Frascht) Logan, Judy built a life centered on family, faith, farming and service to others.
She married Joseph Merfeld on April 1, 1967, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Together, they raised their family while creating a home known for warmth, stability and hospitality.
Judy took particular pride in supporting her children and later her grandchildren, making their school activities and accomplishments an important part of her life.
She worked for eight years at Salsbury in Charles City, but one of the defining chapters of her working life came at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, where she served as secretary and bookkeeper for 45 years.
Her commitment extended well beyond her regular duties. Judy volunteered throughout the church, participated on committees serving Nashua and the Nashua-Plainfield School District, and spent 12 years serving on the Floyd County Extension Council.
Her decades of involvement made her a familiar and trusted presence throughout the community.
Away from those responsibilities, Judy treasured time with family and friends. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities, spending several days each year at the Iowa State Fair and participating for 47 years in a local card club.
She was also known for her home cooking and especially enjoyed gathering family and guests around the table at Christmas.
Those closest to Judy knew her as a woman of deep faith, quiet strength and steadfast devotion to the people around her. Much of her life was spent helping others, whether through her church, community involvement or simply opening her home and heart to family and friends.
Judy is survived by her husband, Joe Merfeld of Nashua; sons Steve (Kendra) Merfeld of Charles City and Andrew (Lisa) Merfeld of Clive; daughter Tracy (Shawn) Mikles of Johnston; grandchildren Sarah (Noah Oliver) Mikles, Matthew Mikles, Kayden Merfeld, Merrick Merfeld and Max Merfeld; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Rose Logan; brothers Robert (Doris) Logan, Marvin Logan in infancy, Earl (Thelma) Logan and Kenneth (Shirley) Logan; sister Arlene (Roger) Chesnut; and several nephews.
