INDIANOLA — A child pedestrian was killed Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle in an Iowa neighborhood, and authorities say the driver was also a juvenile.
Indianola Police and emergency personnel were called at approximately 5:51 p.m. on September 27 to the 400 block of West 18th Place for a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision.
Police said bystanders were already performing CPR on the pedestrian when officers arrived. Officers took over lifesaving efforts, and emergency personnel requested LifeFlight because of the severity of the injuries.
Despite those efforts, the juvenile pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
The driver of the vehicle was also identified as a juvenile. Police are withholding additional identifying information because of the ages of those involved and out of respect for their families.
The Iowa State Patrol was called to the scene and has assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal crash.
Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the collision or whether any citations or charges are anticipated.
The crash remains under investigation.
The Iowa Department of Transportation considers a death crash-related when it occurs within 30 days of a collision, and the state’s preliminary fatality totals can change as investigations are completed.
