This comparison has gotten more visible as more dispensaries and brands add terpene data to their menus and packaging, partly in response to growing consumer interest in the entourage effect and partly because it gives products a second, more nuanced axis to differentiate on beyond a THC percentage that has become increasingly compressed at the high end across many markets. Understanding what that number actually represents, and what it doesn’t, is worth a few minutes for anyone who buys or formulates with any regularity.

Where the terpene percentage on a label comes from

The total terpene percentage printed on packaging or listed in a product’s lab results comes from the same source as the potency numbers: a Certificate of Analysis generated through gas chromatography testing. A lab tests a sample for a defined panel of individual terpenes, myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, linalool, pinene, and others, and reports each one as a percentage of the total sample weight. Add every individual terpene percentage together and you get the total terpene percentage, the single number most often surfaced on consumer-facing packaging or a dispensary’s digital menu.

The calculation itself is simple addition once you have the individual figures: sum every terpene the lab detected and reported. What varies, and what makes cross-product comparison trickier than it looks, is which terpenes a given lab tested for and how carefully the sample was handled between harvest and testing.

Why total terpene percentage matters alongside THC

THC percentage measures one cannabinoid’s concentration. It doesn’t capture the aroma, flavor, or the specific character of the experience a product delivers, which is shaped substantially by which terpenes are present and in what ratio, a relationship widely referred to as the entourage effect. Two products with identical THC percentages can smell, taste, and feel meaningfully different depending on their terpene profile, which is why total terpene percentage has become an increasingly common data point for buyers who care about more than potency alone.

A higher total terpene percentage generally correlates with a more pronounced aroma and flavor, since terpenes are the primary compounds responsible for a cannabis product’s scent. It doesn’t automatically mean a “better” or “stronger” product in every sense, since the entourage effect depends on which specific terpenes are present, not just the aggregate volume. A product with a lower total percentage but a distinctive, well-balanced ratio of a few dominant compounds can deliver a more coherent and recognizable character than a product with a higher total spread thinly across many compounds in roughly equal amounts.

A practical way to compare two products

When comparing terpene percentages between products, a few steps produce a more accurate picture than glancing at the headline total alone.

Confirm you’re comparing the same material type. Flower, live resin, distillate, and other concentrate formats have wildly different expected terpene ranges, since processing methods concentrate or strip terpenes to very different degrees. Comparing a flower’s 2% total against a live resin’s 8% total tells you nothing useful about which product is better, since the categories aren’t on the same scale to begin with.

Check whether the totals came from the same or comparable testing labs. As with any lab-generated figure, panel breadth and sample handling affect the reported total. A 1.5% total from a lab testing a broad 40-compound panel and a 1.5% total from a lab testing a narrower 20-compound panel don’t represent the same underlying terpene content, even though the numbers on the label match exactly.

Look past the total to the dominant individual terpenes. Two products with an identical total percentage can have completely different character depending on which compounds make up that total. A myrcene-dominant profile tends toward earthy, musky notes and is commonly associated with more sedating, body-forward effects in consumer reporting. A limonene- or terpinolene-forward profile tends toward brighter, citrus or herbal notes and is more commonly associated with uplifting, energizing reports. Reading the individual breakdown, when it’s available, tells you far more about what to actually expect than the total alone.

Account for freshness and storage. Terpenes degrade over time and with poor storage, so a product’s terpene percentage at the point of testing may not reflect what’s left by the time it reaches a shelf or a customer’s hands weeks or months later. A recently tested batch with a slightly lower total but fresher packaging can outperform an older batch that tested higher months earlier but has since lost a meaningful share of its volatile compounds to time and air exposure.

A worked comparison

Take the two jars from the opening example. The 22% THC, 1.1% terpene jar and the 19% THC, 2.8% terpene jar might come from the same testing lab and the same material type, flower, which makes them a fair comparison. If the individual breakdown on the second jar shows myrcene, linalool, and caryophyllene as the dominant compounds, a buyer looking for a more relaxing, evening-oriented experience has a reasonable, evidence-based reason to prefer it over the higher-THC option, independent of the three-point THC difference. Conversely, a buyer whose priority is simply the highest THC number available, with no particular interest in aroma or the entourage effect, might reasonably stick with the first jar. Neither choice is objectively correct; the terpene data just gives both buyers a more complete basis for the decision than THC alone would.

What this means for brands formulating with commercial terpene blends

For brands adding terpenes back into a product, whether that’s flower enhancement, a vape cartridge, or an edible, the same comparison logic applies when evaluating supplier options. A commercial terpene blend’s stated total percentage on its own spec sheet says little about how accurately it replicates a specific cultivar’s actual character. What matters more is whether the blend’s internal ratio of dominant compounds matches the target profile the brand is trying to deliver, which is why reputable suppliers publish batch-specific COA data showing the full individual compound breakdown, not just a single summary percentage.

Brands that shop for terpene blends based on total percentage alone, treating a higher number as automatically better, often end up with a product that hits a target number on a spec sheet but doesn’t actually smell or perform like the cultivar it’s meant to represent. Comparing blends on their individual compound ratios against a known reference profile is a more reliable way to evaluate a supplier’s accuracy than comparing headline totals.

Reading labels with the right expectations

Learning how to calculate terpene percentage is useful groundwork, but the real skill for a buyer or brand comparing products is knowing what the resulting number can and can’t tell you. It’s a genuinely useful data point for gauging aromatic intensity and, in aggregate, giving a rough sense of the entourage effect a product might deliver. It’s not a single, universal quality score, and it’s not directly comparable across different material types or testing labs without accounting for those differences first.

The most reliable comparisons happen within a narrow, controlled set of variables: same material type, similar testing methodology, and, where available, the full individual compound breakdown rather than just the summary total. Buyers and brands who make comparisons on that basis get a far more accurate read on what a product will actually deliver than anyone relying on the headline percentage alone.
