EAGLE GROVE — Four people were injured Tuesday morning when a vehicle driven by a Northern Iowa teenager failed to yield at a rural stop sign and was broadsided by a MidAmerican Energy truck.
The crash happened at approximately 10:30 AM on September 8, 2026, at the intersection of 265th Street and Hancock Avenue in Wright County, east of Eagle Grove.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, 17-year-old Cooper Reiland of Belmond was driving a 2010 Ford Edge eastbound on 265th Street.
At the same time, 49-year-old Daniel Oldenkamp of Algona was driving a 2019 Freightliner southbound on Hancock Avenue. The truck was operating for MidAmerican Energy.
Investigators said Reiland failed to yield from the stop sign and the Ford was struck broadside by the truck.
The force of the collision sent both vehicles into the east ditch, where they came to rest near a cornfield.
Reiland was injured and transported by Clarion EMS to Iowa Specialty Hospital.
A passenger in the Ford, 16-year-old Armando Melendez of Clarion, was also injured and taken to Iowa Specialty Hospital.
Oldenkamp was injured, along with 39-year-old Clay Riedesel of Wesley. Both men were transported by Clarion EMS to Iowa Specialty Hospital.
The State Patrol report indicates all four injured people were wearing seat belts and credits the restraints with saving their lives.
Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Hennigar’s Towing.
The collision comes just months after two Belmond residents were killed in another two-vehicle Wright County crash and follows other serious intersection crashes investigated across Northern Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle Grove Fire Department, Clarion EMS and Hennigar’s Towing.
The crash remains under investigation.
