MANLY — Richard George Reed, 80, of Manly, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 30, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He is remembered as a devoted family man, proud U.S. Army veteran and lifelong outdoorsman whose love for family, fishing and friendship touched those around him.
The family will hold a celebration of Rich’s life at a later date.
No final resting place has been announced at this time.
Born on April 30, 1946, in Garrison, Iowa, Rich was the son of George and Thelma (Dake) Reed. He graduated from Dysart High School in 1964 before working in the Waterloo area.
Rich proudly served his country in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant while stationed in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. Following his military service, he completed training and an apprenticeship before beginning a career with John Deere in Waterloo, where he dedicated more than 40 years of service.
Away from work, Rich cherished spending time with his family and friends, whether traveling together or simply enjoying time at home. He especially loved fishing, often sharing that pastime with his mother, and was a loyal Green Bay Packers fan. He also spent many years bowling on teams in the Waterloo area, creating lasting friendships along the way.
Rich is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Lynn; his children, Joseph Abbas and Carrie Abbas Lohmann (Jeremy); grandchildren Paige, Mackenzie, Natalee and Brevin; and great-grandchildren Weston, Trytan and Annaleigh.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Karen, Donald and Monica.
Those who knew Rich will remember a man who proudly served his country, devoted himself to his family and built a life filled with loyalty, hard work and treasured memories that will continue to live on through those who loved him.
