OSKALOOSA — Five people, including two small children, were injured when a Mahaska County sheriff’s transport vehicle collided with an SUV and sent it crashing into a semi-truck at a southeastern Iowa highway intersection.
The three-vehicle crash happened at approximately 12:22 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the intersection of Iowa Highway 92 and Iowa Highway 21.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2019 Dodge Charger operated as a Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office transport vehicle was traveling east on Highway 92 as it approached the junction.
A 2026 Dodge Durango driven by 32-year-old Sabrina R. Ryan of What Cheer was stopped at a stop sign while facing south on Highway 21.
Investigators said Ryan pulled away from the stop sign and failed to yield to the approaching sheriff’s transport vehicle.
The transport vehicle, driven by 34-year-old Megan N. Tucker of Oskaloosa, struck the Durango broadside.
The force of the collision pushed the Durango into a 2025 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that was stopped at the northbound Highway 21 stop sign.
Ryan and two juvenile passengers, ages 5 and 2, were injured and transported by Keokuk County Ambulance to Mahaska Health in Oskaloosa.
Tucker was also injured and taken to Mahaska Health by a Mahaska County deputy.
A passenger identified as 47-year-old Dawn M. Nickel of Ottumwa suffered injuries and was transported by Mahaska County Ambulance to University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City.
The State Patrol reported that all five injured occupants were wearing seat belts and credited the restraints with saving their lives.
The semi-truck driver, 44-year-old Mark S. Harvey of Albia, was not listed among the injured.
The tractor-trailer was operated by Splash Transport Inc. of Indianapolis. No hazardous materials were involved.
The Durango, sheriff’s transport vehicle and tractor-trailer were all towed from the scene.
The Iowa State Patrol investigated the crash with assistance from the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and several other emergency agencies.
