ROCKWELL — James Donald “Jim” Turner, 86, of Rockwell, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2026, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
Jim was born November 18, 1939. According to his obituary, he devoted much of his life to educating, coaching and encouraging young people, earning the respect of generations of students and athletes.
Former students remembered Jim as a dedicated teacher and coach whose lessons often extended beyond the classroom and athletic field. His steady guidance, high expectations and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on the people he taught and mentored.
Jim’s life was deeply connected to Rockwell and the surrounding Northern Iowa community. His obituary and the memories shared by those who knew him reflect a man whose influence continued long after his students left school.
He was also remembered as a devoted family man and trusted friend. Those closest to Jim will carry forward memories of his leadership, wisdom, encouragement and the many lives he helped shape during his long career.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 Second Street South in Rockwell.
A memorial service will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2026, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Lay Minister Jason Grunklee will officiate.
Burial will follow the service at Rockwell Cemetery.
