WAUCOMA — Rodney James Vrzak, 69, of Waucoma, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Mason City.
Rodney was born July 23, 1956, in New Hampton, the son of Frank and Arlene Vrzak. He grew up as one of 10 children in a busy farm family where hard work, laughter and time with siblings shaped his early years.
A graduate of Turkey Valley High School’s Class of 1974, Rodney devoted much of his life to farming. He began helping his father as a boy and later worked for many years alongside his brother, Dick. After his father’s passing, Rodney and Dick continued the family farming operation together until retirement.
Rodney survived a serious farm accident in his thirties, and those who knew him understood that his life still had much to offer. He remained deeply connected to the land, his family and the communities around him.
He was known as a generous supporter of local causes, often showing up for fundraisers and benefits when someone needed help. Rodney also supported the Chickasaw Wellness Complex with both his presence and generosity, and the center became a regular part of his daily life.
Sports were another great joy for Rodney. He proudly supported the Turkey Valley Trojans and could often be found cheering from the stands at football, basketball, baseball and softball games.
Rodney also served for several years on the Jackson Junction City Council, giving his time to help improve his community. He enjoyed visiting with friends at local spots such as Klunder’s Kafe and Hole In The Wall, where conversation and good company were always welcome.
Family, farming, sports and service were central parts of Rodney’s life. He will be remembered for his work ethic, humility, kindness and willingness to support others without seeking attention for himself.
Rodney is survived by his siblings, Phyllis Fosaaen of West Union, Doris Wood of Waverly, Diane Tieskotter of Lime Springs, Mary Cihla of Tripoli, Elizabeth Eskildsen of Georgia, Alice Palas of Cedar Falls, Linda Heiselman of New Hampton and Martin Vrzak of Tennessee; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Dick Vrzak; brothers-in-law, Duane “Dewey” Heiselman and Irv Fosaaen; and many aunts and uncles.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
Friends greeted the family from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, where a 7:00 p.m. Parish Scripture Service was held. Visitation continued one hour before Mass on Friday at the church. A funeral luncheon followed interment at the Waucoma Event Center.
