WATERLOO — A motorist was killed and a Grundy Center woman was injured Sunday evening after a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 20 in Black Hawk County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:34 p.m. on June 21, 2026, near mile marker 224 on westbound U.S. Highway 20.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2017 Nissan Rogue was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 when it crossed the center line for unknown reasons and entered the path of a westbound 2025 Chevrolet Equinox.
The vehicles collided head-on.
The driver of the Nissan, whose identity has not yet been released, suffered fatal injuries. The report indicates the driver was wearing a seatbelt but died as a result of the crash. The individual was transported to MercyOne Medical Center by Covenant Ambulance.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Abby Hamann, 23, of Grundy Center, was injured in the collision. She was transported to MercyOne Medical Center by Sartori Ambulance. The crash report states Hamann was wearing a seatbelt, which investigators credited with helping save her life.
Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were removed from the scene by Rasmusson Towing.
The Iowa State Patrol said the cause of the Nissan driver’s departure from the proper lane remains under investigation.
Assisting agencies included the Iowa State Patrol, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, Waterloo Police Department, Cedar Falls Police Department, Covenant Ambulance and Sartori Ambulance.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
