MASON CITY — A person was taken to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center after gunfire broke out outside the South Federal Avenue Kwik Star in Mason City late Wednesday night, according to Mason City police.
The shooting was reported after an argument between several men near a gas pump at the Kwik Star, located along South Federal Avenue. Mason City Police Chief Mike McKelvey said the dispute apparently escalated into gunfire.
One person went to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. Police said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Mason City police and Iowa State Patrol personnel were nearby and were able to detain the people involved, according to McKelvey. Police said no suspects are at large.
The Kwik Star was cordoned off Wednesday night as investigators processed the outside area of the property. Police described the investigation as being in its early stages.
McKelvey said the department expects to issue a fuller press release Thursday after more details are known.
The shooting drew a heavy law enforcement response to one of Mason City’s busiest commercial corridors. The South Federal Avenue Kwik Star sits along a major route through the city, near other businesses and traffic commonly moving through the south side of Mason City.
No names, ages, charges or additional circumstances were immediately released late Wednesday.
