OSAGE — The Mitchell County Board of Supervisors heard updates on jail certification, upcoming public safety details, road projects and the ongoing courthouse cupola issue during its regular meeting on May 26, 2026.
The board convened at 8:30 a.m. with Supervisors Todd Frein, Mark Wherry, Mike Marzen and Shannon Hendrickson present. Supervisor Deb Hartogh was available by GoTo Meeting. Also present were Aaron Murphy, Justin Trees, Tom Rolfes, Jenny Backer and Ashlie Sveum. The meeting was also made available by video through GoTo Meeting.
Supervisors approved the agenda, then approved the minutes of the May 19 meeting and county claims.
County Attorney Aaron Murphy had nothing to discuss.
County Deputy Sheriff Justin Trees told supervisors the jail certification was completed on May 13 and that everything was found to be in compliance.
Trees also said the sheriff’s office would provide security for two upcoming events. U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley was scheduled to be in Stacyville on May 28, and Zach Lehn was planning to be in Osage on May 30.
Auditor Rachel Foster noted that the following week’s supervisors meeting would be held on Monday because of Tuesday’s election.
Supervisor Mike Marzen said the event at the fairgrounds doubled in performance from last year.
County Engineer Rich Brumm was not available for the meeting, but Supervisor Frein read an email from Brumm providing road and bridge updates. According to the update, work continues on Addison Avenue, the rock map will be sent out, and Brumm will be submitting qualified bridges for a grant.
Supervisors also discussed which route to take with the courthouse cupola issue. The consensus of the board was to have Attorney Murphy contact Joe Gamble to get his opinion. Supervisor Hendrickson said he would reach out to a local contractor to see whether there is interest in providing a quote to fix the cupola.
In supervisor reports, Wherry reported on Mitchell Soil & Water, Frein reported on FMC-ECI and FMC-DECAT, and Marzen reported on North Iowa Community Action Commission. Hartogh and Hendrickson had nothing to report.
There were no public comments.
The meeting adjourned at 8:55 a.m.
