Authorities nab alleged Iowa mass-shooter in Georgia

A fugitive from justice facing five counts of attempted murder after a wild and vicious shooting spree in downtown Iowa City has been nabbed several states away, and is about to be shipped back to face the music for his alleged deeds.

IOWA CITY – A fugitive from justice facing five counts of attempted murder after a wild and vicious shooting spree in downtown Iowa City has been nabbed several states away, and is about to be shipped back to face the music for his alleged deeds.

On Monday, May 11, 2026, Damarian M. Jones (pictured at top) was taken into custody near Atlanta, Ga., by the United States Marshals Service. Jones faces the following charges related to the Sunday, April 19, 2026, shooting in the Downtown Pedestrian Mall:

  • Attempted Murder (Five Counts)
  • Willful Injury Assault Causing Serious Injury (Three Counts)
  • Willful Injury Assault Causing Bodily Injury (Two Counts)
  • Going Armed with Intent

Copies of the charges can be found online. Jones is currently in custody in the Clayton County (Ga.) Jail and will be extradited to Iowa pending an extradition hearing in Georgia.

On April 19th, 2026, at approximately 1:45 AM, the defendant and others (on his side) engaged in a physical fight in the Pedestrian Mall (100 S. College Street, Iowa City) against numerous opposing individuals The defendant continued to fight with numerous individuals for some brine, before obtaining a firearm. At 1:48 AM, a break in the physical altercation occurred, and the defendant walked away from the opposing individuals. The defendant intentionally raised a
handgun in the middle of the crowded Pedestrian Mall. The defendant fired 6 rounds in the direction of the opposing side, where the victims were in a direct line
of fire. Bullets from the defendant’s firearm struck five victims. Information obtained through video evidence and crime scene processing are consistent with all
rounds being fired from the defendant’s firearm.

  • Victim I was struck in the head by a bullet fired from the defendant’s gun Victim I sustained serious, lifeAhreatening injuries to her head
  • Victim 2 was struck in the arm and crest cavity by a pullet fired from the defendant’s gun Victim 2 sustained serious injurres, from these wounds requiring
    surgery.
  • Victim 3 was struck in the leg by a bullet fired from the defendant’s gun. Victim 3 sustained serious injuries from these wounds recuiring MUffiPle Surgeries
  • Victim 4 was struck m the side of the stornach by a bullet fired ftoro the defendant’s gun Victim 4 sustained bodily injury as a reSiLlit of this wound.
  • Victim 5 was struck in both legs by a bullet fired from the defendant’s gun Victim 5 sustained bodily injuries from these wounds

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, all persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

One shooting victim remains hospitalized. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

The Iowa City Police Department was assisted by the United States Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Southern Iowa Fugitive Task Force, and the South East Regional Fugitive Task Force.
