SHELBY, IOWA — A 19-year-old Iowa man has died following a collision between a motorcycle and a farm sprayer Wednesday evening.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m. on April 29, 2026, at 226 County Road M16. According to the crash report, both vehicles were traveling northbound on County Road M16 in Shelby County, prior to the incident. A 2010 Apache 715 sprayer, operated by 37-year-old Luke Applegate of Shelby, began to make a left turn into a driveway when it was struck from the rear by a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle. The motorcycle was driven by Jacob Buman, 19, of Harlan.

The impact of the collision sent the motorcycle into the west ditch of the county road, while the sprayer came to rest in the driveway at the scene. Buman was tragically pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries and was later transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office by Heartland Funeral Home. Applegate was not reported to have sustained any injuries in the collision.

The motorcycle was towed from the scene by Lyons Towing. The Iowa State Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
