OBIT: Margaret Clapp

Margaret Clapp, 92, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the Nora Springs Care Center with loving family at her side. A funeral service for Margaret Clapp will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd.

Margaret Clapp, 92, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at the Nora Springs Care Center with loving family at her side.

A funeral service for Margaret Clapp will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd, Iowa with Pastor Paul Phillips officiating. A fellowship dinner will be served directly after the ceremony. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service at the church on Friday.

Margaret (Danley) Clapp, the daughter of Ruie and Voncile (Newby) Danley, was born on December 31st, 1933, in Opp, Alabama. She attended and graduated from Turkey Creek High School in 1951. Margaret met the love of her life in May of 1956 at a roller rink. Thirty-three days later on June 28, 1956, Margaret married Merlyn Clapp at their preacher’s house in Plant City, Florida. They were happily married for 68 ½ years. They were very proud of their 5 children: Susan, Vernon, Mary, Bertha, and Kevin.

During her school years, Margaret helped with picking strawberries and later worked as a telephone operator. After her last child was born, Margaret’s focus was on her home and family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She never forgot an anniversary or birthday and made sure to send out a card or make a special birthday cake. Margaret was a very active member of Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd. She attended nearly every service she could and helped with the Gospel Sing.

Margaret loved to cook, especially southern soul food. She was best known for her chalupa. She enjoyed hosting and made sure to have freshly baked brownies and sweet tea ready. Margaret was a very sociable person and treasured her time talking with her friends and family on the phone. Margaret and Merlyn enjoyed their weekly dinners with their good friends, Bob and Naomi Winterink. She also enjoyed playing Yahtzee, collecting owls, taking care of her plants and flowers, and watching her soap operas and Jeopardy. She loved word searches and Sudoku.

Living family members include her daughter, Susan (Lou) Ferlanti; son, Vernon (Tracy) Clapp; daughter, Mary (Craig) Elin; daughter, Bertha (Mark) Bertling; son, Kevin (Tonya) Clapp; grandchildren: Sonja, Linda, Dustin, Natalie, Kayla, Christina, Ashley, Allison, Melissa, Elizabeth, Jessica, David and Joshua; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister, Louise Suttles; brother, Dwight (Bonnie) Danley, Sr.; sister-in-law, Carol (Jay) Caneff; friend, Bob Winterink; many step-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlyn Clapp on January 27, 2025; parents, Ruie and Voncile Danley; parents-in-law, Stanley and Lucille Clapp; brother, James Danley; son-in-law Morty David; nephew, Dwight Danley, Jr.; beloved cousins, Junior and Martha Danley; friend, Naomi Winterink; and family friend, Phyllis Muller.
