MASON CITY — A quick-thinking resident is credited with stopping a late-night house fire on Tuesday, though the blaze left a North President Avenue home with significant smoke damage.
The Mason City Fire Department was dispatched to 1418 N. President Avenue at approximately 1:14 a.m. on April 7, 2026, after receiving reports of a fire on the second floor of the home. Although the reporting party believed the fire was out, they noted the residence was filling with heavy smoke.
Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke alarms sounding and thick smoke throughout the interior, but no active flames remained. One occupant was found safely outside and informed officials that the other residents had already evacuated to a neighbor’s house.
According to a press release from Assistant Deputy Chief Randy Elsbernd, the occupant had successfully used a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames before firefighters arrived. While the fire was contained to a single room, the entire house sustained smoke and soot damage.
Investigators determined the cause of the fire was unintentional, resulting from the improper handling of smoking materials.
No injuries were reported at the scene. Firefighters remained on the property until 3:15 a.m. to ventilate the structure and ensure the area was safe. The Mason City Fire Department was assisted by the Mason City Police Department and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department.
