Ragna was born on May 30, 1935, in Mason City, Iowa, to Louis J. and Jennie L. (Meehan) Mentink. She grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1953. On June 3, 1956, she was united in marriage to Ronald Flatness at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. Together, they built a loving home and raised their three sons, Mark, Bruce, and Charlie.
Ragna was devoted to her faith and shared that devotion by teaching preschool Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church. She found great joy in nurturing and guiding young children, always offering patience, kindness, and encouragement.
She appreciated life’s simple joys and took pride in the home she created. Her flower gardens were a source of happiness, carefully tended and always in bloom. Ragna also had a creative spirit and enjoyed painting ceramics and other woodworking crafts that Ronald had made, filling her home with pieces that reflected her talent. One visitor once remarked that stepping into her home felt like walking into a gift shop.
Ragna and Ronald shared a love for ballroom dancing and could often be found traveling throughout northern Iowa to enjoy time together on the dance floor. She also enjoyed playing 500 with family and friends, cherishing the laughter and connection those moments brought.
Above all, Ragna loved her family. She treasured time with her children and grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits. She also enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, especially cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Those left to cherish Ragna’s memory include her children, Mark (Josie) Flatness of Ankeny, IA, Bruce (Lori) Flatness of Scottsdale, AZ, and Charlie (Ann) Flatness of Polk City, IA; her grandchildren, Derek Flatness of Des Moines, IA, Jamie Flatness of Glendale, AZ, Vanessa (David) Boone of Phoenix, AZ, Ashley (Casey) Pothour of Mesa, AZ, Leah (Nick) Davis of Phoenix, AZ, Tanner Flatness of Snowmass, CO, Jacob (Chandler) Flatness of Clive, IA, Alexandra (Shane) Connelly of Bloomington, MN, and Sydney (Tanner) Brunscheon of Bloomington, MN; her great-grandchildren, Ainsley, Grayson, Camden, Daniel, Connor, Benson, Noah, Rosalyn, and Olivia; her brother, Joe (Pat) Mentink; and brother-in-law, Paul (Mary) Franzen, along with many other dear relatives and friends.
