Dennis Leigh, 80 of Algona, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Unity Point – Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church in Algona. Service will be live streamed via First United Methodist Church’s website: http://www.algonaumc.com. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Algona with Military Honors conducted by the Iowa National Guard Honor Guard, the Whittemore American Legion Seely-Walsh Post 425, the Howard D. Omdahl Algona VFW Post 2541 and the Patriot Guard Riders of Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona and will continue one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church.
Dennis Eugene Leigh, the son of George Albert and Evelyn (Loss) Leigh, was born on April 22, 1945, in Algona. He graduated from Thompson High School in 1963. Dennis served his country in the Army in 1965 until 1967 during the Vietnam War. One of his duties as an infantry man was to work as a Tunnel Rat looking for the enemy underground.
On November 29, 1969, Dennis was united in marriage with Rebecca Elwood at Thompson United Methodist Church in Thompson. He worked at Snap-On Tools for 45 plus years, retiring in 2009. In 2014, Snap-On Tools invited Dennis and Rebecca to attend their Snap-On Funded Honor Flight to Washington, DC.
Dennis was a lifetime member of the Howard D. Omdahl Algona VFW Post 2541, a member of the Whittemore American Legion Seely-Walsh Post 425, the Legion Riders, the Patriot Guard Riders of Iowa, ABATE district 7, the Good Sam Camping Club and the First United Methodist Church in Algona.
He enjoyed woodworking, maintaining his lawn and flower gardens, fishing in Northern Minnesota, Arkansas and Canada with his family, riding his recumbent bicycle and participating in 14 RAGBRAI’s, bowling and pool leagues throughout the years, putting jigsaw puzzles together, reading western books and watching western shows. Dennis rode a motorcycle his whole life and the last ten years his CanAm Spyder.
Left to cherish Dennis’s memory is his wife of 56 years, Rebecca; children, Amy Leigh of Algona, John (April) Leigh of Sergeant Bluff, Darin (Erin) Leigh of South Windsor, CT and Jenny (Jeff) Wood of South Sioux City, NE; four grandchildren, Callen, Cora, Kendall and Preston Leigh; a brother, Gary Leigh of Algona; a sister, Nancy Yeoman of Algona and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Evelyn Leigh; a brother-in-law, Richard Yeoman and a nephew in infancy, Gary Donald Leigh.
