March 27, 1952 – February 10, 2026

David “Art” Arthur Kirchmann, 73, of Sumner, passed away Monday, February 10, 2026, at his home surrounded by family.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Becker & Son Funeral Home in Sumner. Memorials may be made in David’s name to Care Initiatives Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

David Arthur Kirchmann, the son of Arthur and Wilma (Niemann) Kirchmann, was born March 27, 1952, in New Hampton, Iowa. He grew up on a farm outside of Sumner and attended Sumner schools through the 10th grade before transferring to Fredericksburg High School, where he graduated in 1970.

David worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, but he spent the majority of his career as a crane operator with Champion Crane Service out of Des Moines. He dedicated 27 years to the company before retiring and returning to Sumner following the passing of his brother.

David was a natural tinkerer who loved working with his hands. He enjoyed woodworking, photography, and had a strong interest in firearms. He was always curious and eager to learn something new. One of his greatest joys was riding motorcycles. Logging nearly half a million miles on the open road over the years. He also lent a steady hand on his cousin’s farm, helping with tillage and running the grain cart during harvest seasons.

Those who knew David will remember his quiet presence, his willingness to help, and his appreciation for the simple things in life. He valued time spent with others and built many lasting friendships along the way.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Allen and her partner David Karaloff of Cascade, Idaho; and his niece, Danielle (RJ) Whitsitt of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived by many cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.

David was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Leon.
