Howard L. Lester, affectionately known to everyone as “Butch,” passed away at the age of 82. A lifelong resident of Ames, Iowa, Butch was a man who never met a stranger and lived life with a spirit that was truly “full throttle.”

Butch was born in Des Moines on July 2, 1943, to Roy and Glennadine Lester. While he called Ames home for his entire life, his heart often led him to the open road and the racetrack. A true car enthusiast, Butch loved the world of racing—the speed, the mechanics, and the camaraderie that came with it.

When he wasn’t at the track or in Ames, his favorite place in the world to be was at the Kout Farm in Lawler, Iowa hanging out with his brothers-in-law, Leo, Dale, and Bill. It was there, surrounded by family and the quiet of the countryside, that he found his greatest joy.

Known as the ultimate “life of the party,” Butch had a rare gift for humor. He could light up any room with a quick wit and a legendary story, ensuring that everyone around him was laughing.

Butch is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ann Kout-Lester of Ames; his son, Mark (Danielle) Lester of Gilbert, Arizona; his brother, James Lester; and his sister, Linda Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Glennadine Lester; his sisters, Elaine and Janice; and his in-laws, Frank and Bernice Kout.

Butch’s legacy of laughter, his passion for cars, and the memories made at the farm will be cherished by his family and the many friends who were lucky enough to know him.

In accordance with Butch’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider a donation to Mary Greeley Medical Center’s Hospice Program or the William R. Bliss Cancer Center.
