Janice “Jan” Daly, age 83, of Cresco, Iowa passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the Evans Memorial Home.
Born on April 2, 1942, in Hubbard, Iowa, Janice Evelyn was the oldest daughter of Vernon and Dorthea (Redding) Boeke. She grew up in the Hubbard area. When she was 16 years old the family moved to a farm near Lime Springs, Iowa. She graduated from Crestwood High School in 1960.
On December 27, 1961, Jan married her high school sweetheart, James Daly. Together they had two children, Randy and Jill. They were married for 52 years.
She worked at the Cresco Cafe and Evans Memorial Home. Jim and Jan purchased Daly Plumbing and Heating from Jim’s parents. Together they ran the business for 42 years, until Jim’s passing in 2013.
Jan was a member of the Cresco United Methodist Church, Cimota Club, Bluff Country Cruisers and Cruise to Cresco.
Jan enjoyed sewing, making quilts, stock car racing, bowling, gardening, baking and spending time with family and friends. But most of all she loved spending as much time as possible with her grandkids.
When dementia and Alzheimer’s prevented her from being in her own home, Jan became a resident of the Evans Memorial Home, where she has lived for the past several years. She was known to be a spit fire; from roaming the halls, to greeting visitors and assisting them with finding their loved ones, Jan liked to be out and about. She was also a bit of an escape artist. She kept the nursing staff on their toes from time to time. As they wondered which door she snuck out of.
Jan is survived by her daughter Jill (Galynn) Mitchell of Ridgeway, IA, grandson Jeremy Dunn of Ridgeway, three step-grandchildren: Nichole (Marcus) Hageman of Decorah, IA, Travis (Kara) Mitchell of Atkins, IA and Ashley (Josh) Rauk of Decorah, ten great-grandkids: McKenzie (Kia) Sims, Liam, Nolan and Keaton Hageman, Mayson, Kaden and Kenley Mitchell, Blakelyn and Hayden Rauk, Randy Dunn and a great-great-grandson Johnathon Sims. Survivors also include two sisters Bev Bina of Cresco and Arvonne (Roger) Fogarty of Urbandale, IA, sister in- law Mary Ellen Turnmire of Cresco, brothers in-law Dave (Kay) Daly of Bonita Springs, FL and Steve (Pamela) Daly of Irvine, KY.
She was preceded in death by her parents, father and mother in-law Thomas and Ellen Daly, husband James Daly in 2013, son Randy Daly in 1981, sister in-law Bev Daly and brothers in-law John Daly, Dale Turnmire and Art Bina .
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Cresco United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at Schmelzer Funeral Home in Cresco on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and again one hour prior to services at the church.
