OBIT: Marlys JoAnn Thompson

Marlys JoAnn Thompson, 88, of Mason City IA, passed away on Monday, September 22nd at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. Marlys went on to work in food service at the cafeterias at Roosevelt and Madison elementary schools, retiring after 25 years of service.

Marlys JoAnn Thompson, 88, of Mason City IA, passed away on Monday, September 22nd at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. Arrangements are with Fullerton Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held Friday, September 26 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior. Following the service, Marlys will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Marlys was born on November 26, 1936 in Mason City, Iowa to parents Paul and Augusta (Sachen) Zuke. She graduated from Mason City Highschool in 1955. The same year, Marlys was united in marriage to Gerald “Jerry” Thompson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. The two made their home in Mason City. Marlys went on to work in food service at the cafeterias at Roosevelt and Madison elementary schools, retiring after 25 years of service. She was also the Mason City Food Service Associations local area secretary.

In life, Marlys enjoyed sewing, reading, flowers, and cats. She was always overjoyed when past students she had served recognized her as “the lunch lady.” Above all, Marlys loved the church. She was a very active member. Her faith and her love for gospel music were very important to her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her siblings; brother Raymond (Martha) Zuke of Mason City, sister Carol (Bernie) Wihlm of Faribault Minnesota, sister Peggy Tasy of Mason City, sister Susan (Tracy) Smith of Mason City, and Sister Diane Solum of Mason City. Sister-in-laws Nancy Young of Garner, and Sharon DeMaris of Mason City, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews.

Marlys is preceded in death by husband Gerald, her parents, grandparents, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and nephew Steve Miles.
