Dave Frerk, age 73 of Mallard, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, August 4, at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish – Sts. Peter & Paul in West Bend. Visitation will be Sunday, August 3, from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Lentz Funeral Home in Mallard. Services have been entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Mallard.
David Theo Frerk was born on March 10, 1952, in Estherville, Iowa to Harold (Harry) and Margaret (Peg McCartan) Frerk. When Dave was a young boy, the family moved back to the Pocahontas area. He attended Pocahontas Catholic Grade School, Pocahontas Catholic High School, and Pocahontas Public High School, ultimately graduating from Rolfe High School in 1971. He always joked that it took him three high schools to graduate. He then attended Iowa Lakes Community College Ag program in Emmetsburg. He went into farming with his dad and brother, Jay, eventually farming on his own. His passion was raising hogs. Later, he worked at various local elevators until retiring in 2014. After his retirement, he worked as a farmhand for Jerry Wickman.
David was united in marriage to Kay Schumacher on July 12, 1975. They had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. To this union, four children were born. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard and a past member of Spring Hills Country Club in Mallard, where he served as board secretary. He enjoyed blackberry brandy, golfing, fishing, gardening, and following the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also loved watching Westerns, The Andy Griffith Show, and doing word search puzzles.
David is survived by his wife, Kay, of 50 years; children, Jeff (Carrie) Frerk of Rolfe, IA, Kari Frerk of Waukee, IA, Tom (Kim Putz) Frerk of Hartford, IA, and Krissy (Mark) Gatrel of Norwalk, IA; grandchildren, Rylie, Paige, and Haiden Frerk of Rolfe, IA; Teigen and Trenton Frerk of Hartford, IA; and Brennan Gatrel of Waukee, IA. He is also survived by his siblings, Jay (Nancy) Frerk of Mallard, Jane (John) Schott of Pocahontas, Joe Frerk of Pocahontas, Dan (Diane) Frerk of Gilmore City, Jim (Cathy) Frerk of Rolfe; his aunt, Katie McCartan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Eugene and Jeanette Schumacher; and grandparents, Edward and Martha Frerk and Theo and Rozella McCartan.
