Andrew Frank “Andy” Cates, 70, of Mason City, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Andy was born on October 24, 1954, in Mason City, Iowa, the only son of Robert “Bob” and Frances “Fran” (Jenkins) Cates. He was raised in Mason City, where he graduated from high school. During those years, he stayed active in just about every sport he could join and was known for his charm, wit, and easygoing nature. As the only boy in a house full of sisters, Andy may have been a little spoiled, just ask them! But more than anything, he was deeply loved, especially by his dad. The two were inseparable; true peas in a pod.
From a young age, Andy had a spark of curiosity and an entrepreneurial spirit. Whether it was lawn care or bug zapper businesses, he was always chasing new ideas, and his dad was his biggest cheerleader. He had a lifelong love for the open road as a dedicated Harley rider and could often be found out on the lake, enjoying a sunny day on the boat. He was also a passionate golfer, bowler, and pool player, always ready for a friendly game and a good laugh.
Andy’s love for golf went far beyond just playing it. He spent much time at the Highland Golf Course, where he grew up learning his love for golf. He was a well-known and familiar face in the community through his longtime work as a groundskeeper at the Mason City Country Club, a role that hardly felt like work to him, as it combined his passion for the outdoors with his love of the sport.
He also loved good food—especially BBQ ribs, his mom’s famous homemade cinnamon rolls, and his favorite meals at Pastime Gardens. It was the simple things in life that brought him joy—and he never kept that joy to himself.
Andy is survived by his mother, Fran Cates; his sisters, Debbie (William) Foster, Jan (Kevin) Helgeson, and Cathy (Tom) Gomez; his sons, Jason (Melissa) Cates and Joey (Kasie) Cates; and his seven cherished grandchildren. He also leaves behind his special friend, Lisa Bauer; his loyal dog, Bocephus; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Cates, and his beloved dogs, Baxter and Grinch, who were never far from his side.
Andy will be remembered for his big heart, love for adventure, and that unmistakable laugh that could fill a room. His memory lives on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared with those around him.
