Thomas “Tommy” Thompson, son of Loren and Mary Lou (Grethen) Thompson. A devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and passionate outdoorsman, passed away surrounded by loved ones. Though he faced challenges in his final years, life never kept him down for long. He was always a fighter with a smile on his face.
Born in Emmetsburg, Iowa, Tom graduated from Pocahontas Catholic High School in 1968. On September 8, 1973, he married the love of his life, Sherri (Sadler) Thompson, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard. The couple made their home in the Mallard area, where they farmed and raised their family together.
Tom had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or simply tending to his garden and farm. His “excessive” fishing collection was a testament to his passion, and his bird feeders were never empty. He took great pride in his family farm, especially in the privilege of working side-by-side with his son Mike for nearly 20 years.
He was known not only for his green thumb but also for his warm spirit. Friends and family were always welcome around his kitchen table, where stories, laughter, and spirits were generously shared. His nickname, “Tommy Appleseed,” suited him well, as he planted countless trees year after year.
Tom’s greatest joy came from sharing his love of nature with his grandchildren and others, passing down his wisdom and love for the outdoors. His legacy will live on in the fields he farmed, the garden he nurtured, and the many hearts he touched.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherri (Sadler) Thompson; his parents, Loren and Mary Lou Thompson; and his brother, Jon Thompson.
He is survived by his sons, Patrick Thompson and Michael (Amy) Thompson, and by his grandchildren: Parker Thompson, Allyson, Emily, and Beau Thompson. He is also survived by his siblings: Don (Gayle) Thompson of Cedar Falls, IA; Julie Thompson Hess of Brainerd, MN; Barb Thompson of West Des Moines, IA; and Dan (Diane) Thompson of Cedar Falls, IA.
Tom is lovingly remembered by his extended Sadler family, including Keith and Phyllis Sadler of Mallard, IA; Rick (Tana) Sadler of Whitefish, MT; Mike (Kathy) Sadler of Las Vegas, NV; Pat (Sharon) Sadler of Havelock, IA; Tom (Marcia) Sadler of Racine, MN; Pam (Kirk) Stokes of Peoria, AZ; Paul (Kristin) Sadler of Linn Grove, IA; and Peg (Roy) Anderson of Stockton, MO, along with many dear nieces and nephews.
