Jo Janola Jane Bravener Selck, 71, of Sumner, died Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Private family graveside services will be held at Alcock Cemetery, rural Frederika.

Jo Janola Jane, daughter of William and Stella (Timmer) Bravener was born February 15, 1954, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Jo began her educational journey at Frederika prior to Tripoli Schools, and later earned her G.E.D. and C.N.A. On November 15, 1970, she was united in marriage with Lloyd Selck at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. To this union two daughters were born, Kandie and Terry. The family lived on the Selck family farm, rural Tripoli for the first year of their marriage to assist Lloyd’s father, Edward, with the farm chores due to a construction accident he incurred. When Edward’s health returned to full strength, Lloyd and Jo moved to New Hampton where they lived until the fall of 1974, when they moved into their home in Sumner. Jo’s professional career began in healthcare where she worked for many years in several local care facilities. One of her most meaningful roles was in New Hampton, where she had the special opportunity to care for her own grandparents. Later, she worked in custodial positions at Tom’s Restaurant and Rockwell Automation in Sumner. Jo was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner and an active volunteer for the Bremer County Democratic Party during the 1980s, often involving her family in campaign efforts and community parades to support local candidates. Jo enjoyed inspiring young girls through a spirit of service as a leader in Girl Scouts. Jo was a talented seamstress, sewing many clothes for her daughters, herself, family and friends; in addition to sewing, she had a passion for quilting, finding joy in creating beautiful one-of-a-kind patterns that she donated to local organizations. Jo lovingly raised and showed her dachshunds with pride, enjoyed the outdoors camping with family, gardening and canning, and taking peaceful walks in the community.

Jo is survived by her husband, Lloyd of Sumner; daughters, Kandie Selck of Jewell and Terry (Rob Hinkhouse) Selck of Rock Rapids; five grandchildren, Jamison, Alexander, and Raymond Alfseike, Shawna Ohm and Samantha (Nick) Clifford; one great-grandchild, Opal Alfseike; siblings, Sheryl (Steven) Bruch of New Hampton, William J. (Pauline) Bravener of Frederika and Susan (Kevin) Graeser of Nashua; step-mother, Geraldine Bravener of Denver; brothers-in-law, Lee (Kathy) Selck of Fredericksburg and Everett Shinstine of Ionia; sister-in-law, Diana Selck of Sumner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Stella Bravener; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Luella and Edward Selck; sister, Beverly Shinstine; and brother-in-law, Larry Selck.
