June 1, 1951 – June 8, 2025
Gary William Weiner, 74, of Rockwell, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
He was born June 1, 1951, at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City to Frank and Ann (Cooling) Weiner and was the second eldest of six children. Gary graduated from Rockford High School in 1969 and NIACC in 1972.
Gary had a lifelong passion for agriculture, ignited by his work helping on the farm as a young boy. When Gary was 16, his parents purchased Cartersville Elevator, where, working alongside his parents and siblings, he found a deep sense of pride and purpose in their work. What started as a family business became a legacy, something he was proud to carry on with his siblings and later with his son, brother, and nephew. He believed in showing up, working hard, and treating people right. For Gary, those who came through their doors weren’t just customers, they were friends. Many became like family, and he treated them that way—Families Working Together.
On August 19, 1972, Gary married Sheryl Mansmith at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Gary and Sheryl made their home in Cartersville for 41 years, where they raised their family, before moving to Rockwell in 2013. They had four children—Matt, Brent, Sarah, and Lindsay—and 13 grandchildren. Becoming a grandpa to 10 girls and 3 boys brought Gary true joy. He was proud of each grandchild and supported them in whatever they pursued. Some of their favorite times together were waffle breakfasts, cousins’ weekends, and endless rounds of homemade malts. Topping the list were rides on Grandpa’s collection of antique John Deere tractors—simple traditions that will be treasured forever.
Gary lived out the meaning of commitment, especially when Sheryl was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He remained by her side through every challenge, caring for her with patience, tenderness, and loyalty. Sheryl was the love of his life, and he lived out his wedding vows every day.
He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Gary was also a dedicated supporter of Handicap Village (now known as One Vision)— where his older brother Joe resided—as well as the Alzheimer’s Association, both organizations close to his heart.
Gary was known for his strong faith, generosity, his calm presence, and the kind of thoughtful advice that was appreciated by all who knew him. Gary didn’t need the spotlight, he simply lived his values every day. He loved his family, worked hard, and always made time for others.
He will be deeply missed by those who knew him and loved him, including his beloved wife of almost 53 years, Sheryl; their children and grandchildren–Matt and Christine Weiner, Madison, Avery Ann, and Rowan; Brent and Keely Weiner, Emma, Jayce, Cole and Tess; Sarah and Andy Johnson, Olivia, Paige and Hayden; and Lindsay and Kyle Hildman, Baylor, Perri, and Boston; his siblings–Dick Weiner, Steve and Jill Weiner, Janet and Frank Hanig, Barb and Larry Rooney; as well as many extended family members.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ann; in-laws, Harold “Willie” and Gladys Mansmith; brother Joe; sisters-in-law, Judene Weiner and Barb Weiner; and nephew, Adam Hanig.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 5 pm until 7 pm At 3:30 pm, the Knights of Columbus will lead a rosary, which will be followed by a Scriptural Wake Service. All are invited to attend.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, June 13, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm St., Rockwell, with Rev. Josh Link, Celebrant. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Following the services, the family will host a luncheon in Gary’s honor at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Rockwell; all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in Gary’s honor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church or with the family for the Alzheimer’s Association.
