CLIVE, IOWA – This Iowa tattoo artist is accused by police of doing more than installing body art on his clients while at his place of employment, and now the wrath of the law is knocking at his door.
On May 30, 2025, the Clive Police Department arrested 27-year-old tattoo artist Mark Cates of Ames, Iowa, following several investigations of alleged sexual assaults which occurred at a Clive business.
On May 15, 2025, the Clive Police Department received a complaint from an individual who reported being sexually assaulted during an appointment at Lucky Gal Tattoo and Piercing, located at 1800 NW 86th Street in Clive, where Cates was employed at the time. A second victim came forward on May 21, 2025, reporting a similar assault at the same location.
“We recognize how difficult it can be to come forward after experiencing something traumatic, and we want anyone who feels uncomfortable or violated to know they are not alone. Even if you’re unsure about what happened, reaching out to law enforcement can be a crucial step. We approach these situations with respect, discretion, and a commitment to taking every report seriously,” said Clive Police Officer Courtney Owen, sex assault advocate and lead investigator on the case.
The victims in this case have been offered support services and connected with a local advocacy organization. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, no personal details or victim identities will be released at this time.
“The Clive Police Department takes all reports of sexual assault seriously,” said Chief Mark Rehberg. “We are committed to supporting survivors and pursuing full accountability through a fair, thorough, and impartial investigative process. While Cates has been arrested, this investigation is not over.”
Additional victims are asked to contact Clive PD or their local police agency.
Cates has been charged with two counts of Assault with the Intent to Commit Sex Abuse and was taken into custody without incident. He is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
