Shirley M. Strub, 94, of Sumner, died Monday, March 31, 2025, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner, surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, April 4, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Tracy Hinkel officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 3rd at Becker & Son Funeral Home and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Friday. Memorials may be made to Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner, Care Initiatives Hospice or to the family for later designation.

Shirley Mae, daughter of Milton and Evelyn (Mielke) Schlitter was born May 26, 1930, in Monona, Iowa. She was baptized in the Evangelical Faith on May 7, 1934. She attended school in Monona and Postville and graduated from Northeast Community College in Calmar. On June 8, 1948, Shirley was united in marriage with George Strub at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville. To this union five children were born. The couple farmed in the Sumner and surrounding areas for many years. Shirley worked at Sears and also worked at D.J.’s Pizza in Sumner for eleven years. In addition, she was a homemaker. Shirley was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Esther Circle and served on the Altar Guild for a number of years. She enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, traveling, bowled for many years (bowled in several leagues), but her greatest joy was time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her children, Patricia (Randy) Ohrt of Daphne, Alabama, Jo (John) Lang of Sumner, and Lee (Laura) Strub of New Brighton, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard Strub of Sarasota, Florida; and sister-in-law, Carole Schlitter of Willmar, Minnesota.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George on November 2, 2010; two daughters, who died in infancy; brothers, Willard (Shirley) Schlitter and Gary Schlitter; and sister-in-law, Helen Strub.
